Beginner Basics for Laying Out a Vegetable Garden

A good garden plan from year to year is an important part of growing your own veggies. Annual vegetable plants thrive best with proper spacing, good “neighbors,” and crop rotation when it makes sense.

Honestly, I’m still learning new lessons every year about what works well and what doesn’t, as far as where to plant what. It’s an ongoing process, and the results can vary depending on your growing conditions. Still, you don’t want to start blind like I did with my first garden. Spacing issues are one of the top newbie mistakes that can spell trouble for your harvest (throwback to when I thought I could plant peppers a foot away from my deceptively tiny squash transplants).

Knowing the basics of laying out a vegetable garden from the beginning helps to prevent disease, nutrient deficiencies, and pest problems and increase your overall yields.

For New Garden Plots: Rows, or Beds?

If you’re starting from the ground up and planning the framework for your veggie garden, should you go with a traditional row layout, or individual garden beds? (If you already have a garden spot all set up, feel free to skip to the next section.)

Some folks just like the look of a traditional row layout, for a vegetable garden. It’s old-fashioned, it’s quite satisfying if you like things tidy and organized, and it has some practical benefits, too.

When your veggies are laid out in single rows with walkways in between, you can reach the plants directly from either side. That makes tasks like weeding, pruning, and harvesting a lot easier. If you’ve got tomatoes planted in a 4’ x 10’ garden bed (like a typical raised bed), you’ll have to duck and lean a little bit to reach branches (and weeds) growing near the inside.

The biggest drawback to a traditional row layout is the space it requires; you’ll need a wide, open plot for multiple rows. Growing in individual beds offers more flexibility with your garden placement. For example, you could line up five or six 4’ x 10’ garden beds along the edge of your yard. You’ll still have a lot of planting space, but you won’t have to sacrifice half your backyard for a big ol’ square vegetable garden.

Individual beds, such as raised garden beds or my roughly 4’ x 12’ in-ground beds, also allow you to get more creative with intercropping and companion planting, since you’re not confined to those straight, single rows. I’d say individual beds are the way to go, if you’d like to grow a lot of produce in a limited space. It’s the perfect layout to use with space-saving strategies like square foot gardening and intercropping.    

Tip: If you lay your garden out in individual beds or raised beds, don’t make the beds too wide! Ideally, you should be able to reach the middle for weeding, harvesting, etc. without stepping in the bed. Four feet is a good maximum width for garden beds.

Spacing Needs for Vegetable Plants

When you’re excited about growing all the things, it’s tempting to try and squeeze as many plants as possible into the space you have. More plants doesn’t always equal more produce, though. Cramming heavy-feeding annuals too close together will reduce your yields; they’ll compete for water and nutrients, and nobody will get enough. Overcrowding also leads to poor airflow, which favors disease.

Proper spacing is essential to make sure your vegetable plants grow and produce to their full potential. A healthy, happy plant with plenty of root space and good airflow will easily produce more on its own (and over a longer window) than two overcrowded plants that end up nutrient deficient and diseased.

The chart below shows some general guidelines for veggie spacing:

You don’t need to follow the above spacing guidelines like it’s an exact science. How much flexibility you have for plant spacing depends on your soil quality, fertilizing routine, and trellising method. Plants grown in good soil with regular feeding may do fine if planted a little closer. Rather than growing in rows, you can also try staggering plants to get more in a bed.

Growing vining plants vertically on a trellis also allows for closer spacing. Tomatoes generally need three feet or so between plants for good airflow, when grown in cages. When grown vertically on something like a string trellis or cattle panel, you can get by with as little as 12 to 18 inches for indeterminate (vining) varieties, if you prune them regularly. Same goes for cucumbers, winter squash, and other plants that vine and fruit.

I usually space tomato plants roughly 18 inches apart when I grow them on a string trellis or cattle panel.

As you get more experience with growing veggies, you’ll learn how much room your plants need to thrive in your garden. You’ll find out where you can bend the rules to get more from your space. For example, maybe you prefer to harvest kale, mustard, and Swiss chard as baby salad greens rather than large leaves. If the goal isn’t growing massive plants, you can definitely space greens like this MUCH closer.  

For folks who are brand new to vegetable gardening, I suggest aiming for the recommended spacing in your first season. This way, you can see up close and personal how BIG many annual veggies can actually get before you play around with higher-intensity planting.

Intercropping: What Grows Well Together, and What Doesn’t?

Intercropping, or allowing veggies that do well as neighbors to share a bed, is one of my favorite ways to maximize my use of space in the garden. One combination I have every year is pole beans and pickling cucumbers. I grow pole beans on one edge of the bed on a vertical trellis, leaving plenty of space for the cucumber plants to spread out along the mulch.

Pole beans and pickling cucumbers make good neighbors for a few reasons. Beans don’t need a lot of nitrogen like cucumbers do, meaning they won’t be competing for nutrients. Those sprawling cucumber canopies also help smother weeds and keep the soil shaded and moist for the beans. Summer squash is also known to grow well with beans in this way.

Another cool idea for intercropping is to plant faster-maturing crops in the gaps between slower ones. Heading brassicas like cabbage and broccoli take a long time to reach harvest size. Though they get big later in the season, they’re tiny in the seedling stage. You can use the large amount of space needed between seedlings to grow out quicker cool season crops. Radishes and baby greens will be ready to harvest well before the cabbage needs more room.     

There are lots of possibilities for intercropping, and it’s fun to get creative with pairings. However, some plants just don’t grow well near each other under most circumstances. Here are some examples of bad neighbors:

Any two crops that both grow large before harvest and need lots of nutrients: i.e., don’t plant tomatoes beside summer squash. Generally, most fruiting annual crops (tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, melons) need a good bit of space from other fruiting annuals. Corn and brassicas like cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower are also large, heavy-feeding plants.

Root veggies + Nitrogen-hungry crops: Though these two crop types won’t compete for nutrients, their fertilizer needs are totally different. You’ll need to feed crops like cabbage, broccoli, and tomatoes with a higher-nitrogen fertilizer for best yields. When exposed to too much nitrogen, nearby root crops like beets and carrots may develop heavy top growth and small roots.  

Beans + Onions and other alliums: Beans use a special kind of bacteria to convert and absorb nitrogen from their surroundings, a process called nitrogen fixing. Alliums like onions and garlic produce antibacterial compounds, which interfere with beans’ nitrogen fixing and can stunt their growth when planted too close.

Peppers + Most other annuals: Unlike most garden vegetables, peppers are true perennials that can live for years in frost-free climates. They have a slow and steady growth habit, and they’re easily choked out by greedier annuals. We’ve found that peppers do best when planted near other peppers and less aggressive neighbors like herbs and flowers that do not get huge, such as Calendula.

Making Space for Companion Plants

Companion plants like flowers and kitchen herbs add some color to the garden, and having those herbs on tap for cooking is a big money saver if you enjoy fresh herbs. They also serve other important purposes for your vegetable plantings.

For one, an abundance of blooms attracts more pollinators. This is essential for getting a good crop from things like cucumbers and squash, which rely solely on insect pollination. Companion plants also create diversity in your garden, inviting in more beneficial insects and natural pest predators. Vegetables planted all by themselves are sitting ducks for pest insects, so it’s definitely worth making space for companion plants.

Herbs and many companion flower options aren’t nearly as resource hungry as annual veggies. If space is tight, you can tuck them into edges and corners, and they’ll do fine. Some lower-feeding flowers that grow well close to annual veggies include calendula, nasturtiums, borage, alyssum, and German chamomile.   

Keep in mind that some companion plants need a little more thought than others, regarding ideal placement. Marigolds, one of the more popular companion flower choices, can get quite large and bushy. I’ve had the old-fashioned single-bloom varieties spread up to three feet wide at maturity! Sunflowers, while they attract tons of pollinators, get really tall and will shade out your crops if not planted in a strategic place.

Crop Rotation: How Important is it?

Once you have an established vegetable garden, you’ll want to start considering crop rotation while planning your layout from season to season. Rotating crops, or planting crops within the same plant family in a different location each year, helps prevent plant-specific diseases and pests from building up in the soil. It also helps prevent nutrient deficiencies.

The “official” crop rotation guidelines are a bit unrealistic for backyard gardens. For example, it’s recommended to avoid planting tomatoes or other nightshades (like tomatoes and peppers) in the same place again for at least four years. That’s challenging to impossible, if you’re growing in a smaller space with higher-intensity planting strategies. Thankfully, you can be much more lenient with crop rotation in a home garden compared to a commercial farm.  

Crop rotation is important for commercial farmers because of how they manage large crops. The crop residue is often left in place and/or tilled into the soil after harvest, since it would be impractical and costly to clean it all up. To prevent disease carryover, that field is then planted with unrelated crops for several years to “starve” lingering disease spores.

In a small backyard garden, it’s only a few hours’ work to remove leftover plant debris at the end of the season. This really limits the amount of disease spores that stay behind in the soil. Extended rotation schedules aren’t usually necessary, here.

Though it doesn’t need to be as strict if you clean up well after harvest, practicing some crop rotation is still helpful for small-scale gardens. We like to follow a loose two-year rotation schedule for our crops, mainly to prevent soil depletion. It also helps a bit with pest problems.    

Some ways to use crop rotation in a backyard garden:

Follow heavy-feeding crops with light-feeding crops: Most fruiting crops, like tomatoes and squash, suck up a lot of nutrients from the soil. So do nitrogen-hungry vegetables like cabbage and broccoli. If you plant “hungry” crops in the same bed for multiple years in a row, the soil becomes depleted.

Instead, alternate those greedy crops with light feeders such as beets, carrots, beans, or peas. This gives the soil a chance to re-charge as you amend.

Follow pest-prone crops with something less susceptible. Many garden pests (or their larvae) overwinter in the soil after feeding on your plants. Cabbage worms, cucumber beetles, squash vine borers, and potato beetles do this, to name a few.

For the above reason, it’s best to follow crops problematic pests like to eat with something that isn’t on the menu, especially if you had a lot of pest pressure the previous season. As an example, don’t plant Swiss chard or other leafy greens where cabbage was grown last year. Instead, plant something cabbage worms don’t like, such as peppers or beans.

While this crop rotation tactic won’t prevent pests from finding your new plants each year, it’ll certainly keep them from getting a convenient head start. It’s especially important if you plan to start using a barrier like insect netting to protect certain crops from pests. You don’t want the pests hatching out under your barrier!  

Rotate crops within the same family on a two-year schedule, when possible. I.e., after growing potatoes, don’t plant other nightshade crops like tomatoes, peppers, or eggplant in that plot the next season. On top of good garden cleanup, leaving a year in between related crops allows time for any missed crop residue to break down, lessening any chance of disease carryover.

I’ve found this is most important for crops with similar nutrient needs or those that tend to struggle with pests and disease. In some cases, you can break the “rules” without much risk.

For example: tomatoes and potatoes both use a lot of potassium and nitrogen. They’re also both highly susceptible to the same diseases, like Early Blight. Because of that, I don’t plant tomatoes where potatoes grew in the last year. Peppers, while they’re part of the nightshade family, have a much lower nutrient demand, and they’re not prone to those common fungal leaf blights. I have no problem planting peppers where tomatoes last grew (and vice versa).

A Few Tips for Mapping the Garden Layout

With all the above things in mind, it’s helpful to put your garden layout plan on paper before you start planting. Otherwise, it’s hard to visualize how everything will fit in your space. There are a bunch of apps and planners for this, which are great resources. Or, you can keep things simple with pencil and paper. I like to just make a simple pencil sketch of my garden beds and fill in where each crop will go.

Note: Keep a copy of each season’s garden layout plan so you can refer to it for crop rotation later. It’s super easy to forget where things were planted after a busy year has passed.

Another thing I find helpful is using little landscape flags to mark where seeds or seedlings will go in the garden. This helps you see exactly how many plants you can fit in a certain area with the spacing you’re aiming for (and make necessary adjustments before anything goes in the ground). Having placeholders as you plant also keeps your spacing tidy and accurate.

I just pull my little flag markers out as I put in each transplant. This way, I don’t accidentally lose track of where I’m supposed to be planting.

While a good layout is a must, it’s only part of the big picture for a successful new garden.
