When to Direct Sow Vegetable Seeds for Spring (and Some Sowing Tips)
When you’re first getting into growing vegetables from seed, one important thing to learn is which seeds should be started indoors and which are best planted right in the garden.
Starting seeds indoors gives you a head start on your harvest. It also means you can protect tiny seedlings from pests and bad weather until they get a little bigger. Some crops, however, would rather be planted right in the garden and left to grow undisturbed. For those crops that can be started either way, direct sowing can make life easier for the gardener, since less steps are involved.
My great grandma, who always had a huge garden, had a little sunroom where she’d start her tomato seedlings inside. Everything else, she’d sow in the ground. As a woman with a bunch of kids and a farm to run, I figure she didn’t have the time to fuss over multiple trays of seedlings in the house!
Direct sowing seeds isn’t nearly as complicated as starting seedlings indoors. Your direct-sown veggies will be some of the easiest you’ll grow. Even so, there are a few best practices to follow to get good germination and protect seedlings from pests and other misfortunes.

Which Seeds Should Be Direct Sown?
A few crops almost always grow and produce better when direct sown, while others fall into the either/or category. Direct sowing is most essential for root crops like carrots, beets, and parsnips. These crops develop a long taproot early on after sprouting. The healthier that taproot, the bigger the edible roots will grow. Planting root vegetables in seedling pots can limit the taproot and lead to an undersized harvest.
Other crops on the direct sow list are particularly sensitive to transplanting. Peas and beans are highly susceptible to transplant shock and stunted growth, if their roots are disturbed.
Some veggies, like lettuce, kale, and kohlrabi, are cool with either planting method. They transplant well, but direct sowing them can save you some time and free up real estate in your indoor seed-starting space.

Direct Sowing Timelines for Spring
Sowing seeds at the right time is a must, for a good crop. Some crops suffer cold damage if planted too early, and cool-season vegetables need enough time to grow before the summer heat. Planting too late can cause them to bolt, meaning they’ll produce flowers instead of an edible harvest.
For a spring garden, your average last frost date serves as a general guideline for when to sow seeds. I also recommend getting a dedicated thermometer to check your soil temperature before sowing. Seeds planted in soil that’s too cold won’t sprout reliably, or the seedlings will be fragile and more vulnerable to damping off disease (sudden seedling death). Soil can warm faster or slower in the spring, depending on what your weather’s been like.

The recommendations vary depending on who you ask, for the “best” minimum soil temperatures for sowing different veggies. Some crops can germinate at lower temperatures than those listed. However, germination will be faster and more uniform if you wait for the soil to warm up some, and you’ll have less chance of running into problems.

Preparing a Seed Bed
Vegetable seeds will germinate and grow best in loose, well-drained garden soil. For in-ground garden beds, mixing some compost into the top few inches of soil helps prevent compaction and promote good drainage. You can also plant seeds on “hills” or raised rows to make sure they don’t wash around or sit in standing water after a heavy rain. This is especially a wise idea if your garden soil is high in clay like ours.
Most root vegetables on the direct sow list won’t do their best in clay-heavy soils without LOTS of amending. For that reason, I have some dedicated raised garden beds and Hügelkultur beds for growing those crops.
Pro tip: if you plan to use drip irrigation or soaker hoses, get everything installed and ready to go before sowing any seeds. I’ve forgotten to do that before, and it was pretty tedious to get the soaker hose arranged without accidentally wiping out a row of little sprouts.
Ensuring Good Soil to Seed Contact
Sometimes, the soil in your garden is a little rough compared to that soft, fluffy seedling mix you use for starting seeds in pots. If you use lots of mulch on your garden, there’s probably some debris from decaying organic matter in the surface soil. I tend to spread a lot of un-sifted compost on my no-till beds, as well.
This is all great for your garden soil, and it won’t bother transplanted seedlings. However, it’s not so great for seeds trying to germinate (especially tiny ones). Seeds need good contact with moist soil in order to germinate. Gaps and air pockets due to woody pieces and other debris will dry out your seeds, causing patchy sprouting.
Before sowing seeds, thoroughly pull back any mulch from the planting spot (leave it in place and push it back once seedlings are big enough). If the surface soil beneath still has a rougher texture, you can dig a little furrow for your seeds and fill it with finely sifted compost or potting soil. This trick is especially helpful to improve germination for tiny seeds that need to be surface sown, like carrots or lettuce.

After sowing, water the seeds in well to settle everything in. Avoid using a watering can with a hard pour for newly planted seeds; this can move the soil around and displace them. I like to use a garden hose sprayer on the gentle shower setting for watering seed beds. Watering cans with a “shower” spout that slows the water down work, too.
Tip: For large seeds like beans and squash, it’s fine to leave a light layer of mulch over the seed bed to help keep the soil moist. The sturdy little sprouts won’t have any problem pushing through.
Planting Seeds at the Proper Depth
Sowing too deep is a common rookie mistake that can lower seed germination. It pays to check the seed packet for sowing instructions before planting, since some seeds need to be sown shallower than you’d think. Certain seeds, such as lettuce, need light to germinate and should be sown on the soil surface.
Some gardeners like to use garden tools with measurement marks on them to get that sowing depth down to a tee. If you’re like me and you prefer to wing it, you’ll get better results when you err towards the shallower side.

How Often Should Direct-Sown Seeds Be Watered?
Right beside soil temperature, dry soil is one of the biggest enemies of seed germination. Check on your beds often while waiting for the seeds to sprout and water as needed to keep the soil surface moist. If the sun’s out and you’re having warm temperatures, you’ll need to look in on them several times per day.
When watering seed beds, you don’t want to drown your seeds by keeping the soil downright muddy all the time. During the sprouting stage, though, too-dry conditions are more likely to cause poor germination than overwatering. Consistent, even moisture is key, but don’t overthink it. If the soil surface has more dry spots than damp areas, it’s definitely time to wet it down.
Staying on top of watering is most important for small, shallowly planted seeds in un-mulched beds. Tiny, surface-sown seeds like lettuce will need water more often than deeply planted ones like beans and peas.
Once seedlings have germinated and started to grow, their taproots can access moisture from deeper in the soil. At this point, let the soil dry a little bit more between waterings to encourage strong root development.

Overseeding and Thinning for Healthier Stands
There’s an old saying about planting corn that goes “one for the blackbird, one for the crow, one for the cutworm, and one to grow.” The wisdom here is that seeds planted out in the garden unprotected have a lower success rate than those started indoors. To account for losses due to pests and other issues, always sow more than you need. This is called overseeding.
Once surviving seedlings get big enough something can’t eat them in one bite, thin them down to the recommended spacing for that crop (found on seed packets). Thinning seedlings is best done by cutting them off at the soil line with a sharp pair of scissors rather than pulling, which might disturb the roots of the keepers.

Protecting Young Seedlings From Frost
Direct-sown seedlings are hardier than those started indoors, since they’ve experienced temperature swings and harsher conditions from the time they were tiny sprouts. Still, late hard frosts or sub-freezing temperatures can damage even the frost-tolerant veggies when they’re tiny seedlings.
Cold-hardy plants can sometimes recover from frost damage, but it’ll set back their growth. To keep early spring seedlings going strong, have some frost cloth or old sheets on hand to cover them during serious cold snaps. We use PVC hoop tunnels to hang frost cloth. Any kind of support will work, as long as it keeps the fabric from laying on the seedlings.
Protecting Seeds and Sprouts from Pests
While overseeding is a good way to make up for pest losses, you’ll have those situations when pests try to take more than their fair share. Sometimes, you’ll have to use defensive measures so you don’t lose your whole crop. Cutworms, slugs, birds, deer, and rabbits are some of the biggest troublemakers for newly planted seed beds.
Cutworms
These caterpillars hide under mulch or loose soil during the day, then come out at night to gnaw on your seedlings. They tend to eat only the base of the stem before moving on to the next, leaving behind sprouts that look like they’ve been cleanly chopped down. To me, that’s almost worse than if they ate the whole thing!
If you’re taking heavy damage from cutworms, you can protect tiny seedlings by collaring them with a slice from a paper towel or TP roll. For whatever reason, cutworms won’t crawl over the collar. I’ve also noticed that cutworms usually stick to feeding in just one general area. If you have large seed beds or rows with lots of seedlings, it’s sometimes only necessary to collar the ones near where you’ve found cutworm damage.

Slugs
In our garden, slugs really like squash, cucumber, and bean seedlings. A single slug can eat both cotyledons (seedling leaves) off a newly emerged sprout in no time, meaning that poor seedling is done for.
Sprinkling a barrier of diatomaceous earth (DE) around seedling rows works well to deter slugs during dry weather, but it’s ineffective if it gets wet. Birds, Deer, and Rabbits
Birds aren’t exactly garden pests. They eat bad bugs (and slugs!) and help keep pest populations under control. They do, however, have a weak spot for freshly planted seeds. If you see songbirds messing around in your seed beds, they’re probably not doing you a favor.
A temporary cover over the seed bed is the best way to prevent bird shenanigans. It should be something breathable that lets light and water through, like screen or netting. I have some old window screens I saved for this purpose.
Most of the time, songbirds will leave seedlings alone once they’re growing. They’re more interested in eating bugs and seeds. Deer and rabbits are a whole different story! We share our property with a lot of wildlife, and we’ve found that a physical barrier is the only foolproof way to keep such marauders away from vegetables beds. Scent repellants are hit or miss, at best.
If you don’t have a fence, a hoop tunnel with insect netting provides plenty of protection from deer and rabbits. It’ll also keep out caterpillars and other insect pests as a bonus, making your pest control regimen a lot simpler. Just keep in mind this kind of barrier only works for crops that don’t require pollination, like greens and root vegetables. Crops such as beans, peas, and cucumbers won’t produce if pollinators can’t access the flowers.

If you sometimes get overwhelmed with your indoor “nursery” during the spring, direct sowing more of your crops makes things easier. It’s not just for vegetables, either. You can also direct sow herbs such as dill and basil, as well as most annual flowers. It never hurts to try both ways, when you’re unsure. You might just find some crops grow better for you when sown out in the garden the old-fashioned way.
