The Truth About No-Till Gardening: What Every Beginner Should Know

No-till is a major topic in organic and sustainable gardening, and with good reason. A well-implemented no till system will boost soil fertility and greatly reduce the need for watering, fertilizing, and other run-of-the-mill garden chores. It can also help prevent problems like poor soil drainage and compaction, since tilled ground is more prone to those things.   

Despite the perks, no-till definitely isn’t a one-stop solution to all the challenges of growing your own food. It comes with some unique challenges of its own, which are discussed a lot less than the benefits.

As somebody who’s been through the process of starting a no-till garden, I can tell you it’s important to be prepared for the problems you’ll run into from the beginning. In this post, I’ll break down a few of the less-mentioned realities beginners need to know about, whether you’re making the switch or starting right on a lawn.

First, how does no-till work?

You know how things grow just fine in the wild, even though nobody’s out there tilling, weeding, and hoeing? Nature’s been growing plants since way before we were, so it makes sense to pay attention to how it works, as opposed to hacking into the ground and hoping for the best. That’s the whole idea behind no-till gardening.

To understand how no till methods work, you have to first understand how the soil biome works. In natural settings, the soil biome is part of a complete ecosystem that provides the plants with what they need. It’s pretty complex, but here is a semi-condensed version:

There’s a constant input of organic matter happening in wild places. All dead things, such as fallen leaves, logs, vegetation, etc., are left to decompose on the ground. The worms, microbes and fungi living in the soil digest them and turn them into nutrients for new growth.

On top of enriching the soil with nutrients, healthy populations of soil organisms contribute to good structure, too. As they work, soil microbes produce a sticky substance that acts as a binder between soil particles, making the soil more resilient against compaction and erosion. Root-like fungal networks called mycelia provide air and drainage as they grow deep into the topsoil.

Some fungal organisms produce fruiting bodies (mushrooms) to spread spores and reproduce. These cute mushrooms are just what you see above ground here at the base of my woodchip pile- not visible is the expansive network of fungal mycelia underneath.

Fairly recently, we’ve started to realize just how important fungi and their mycelia are for plant health. Some mycelia, such as mycorrhizae, bind directly with plants’ roots and help them access more nutrients. They’re also capable of filtering toxins from the ground and warding off root knot nematodes and disease-causing “bad” fungi. There’s even evidence mycelia can act as a network for plants to communicate with each other so they can bolster their defenses if a threat is nearby. Seriously!

The purpose of no-till gardening is to keep the soil biome intact and encourage it to grow.

See the tiny white strands? Those are mycelia underneath the mulch in one of my no-till beds. That’s a good sign all the compost and leaf litter I’ve added are doing their job of attracting helpful soil life.

What happens when you till every year?

Regular tilling interrupts beneficial soil life before it can ever get established. Ground that’s managed this way is more likely to get compacted and/or waterlogged, without structure from fungi and microbes. Soil that’s lacking in life also has less available nutrients, which means plants will need more supplemental feeding.

Essentially, the tilling method creates an ongoing cycle of work on your part. You’ll be cultivating to keep the top layer from compacting, fertilizing to supplement the nutrients the soil is missing, and pulling up the deep-rooted weeds nature will put there in her attempt to repair that damaged ground.

Though there are different approaches to no-till gardening, the goal is to focus on recreating natural conditions in the garden. That way, you provide a good habitat for beneficial organisms so they can do their thing. Put simply, you do this by layering organic matter- like natural mulch and compost- on top of the soil, while disturbing it as little as possible.

Summing Up The Benefits of No-Till Methods

No-till systems are more sustainable than traditional ones, since living soil generates much of its own nutrients and requires less input and cultivation. A healthy soil biome makes plants more resilient against pests and disease, reducing our reliance on fungicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. It also improves soil structure, and the layer of organic matter helps retain moisture so you won’t need to water as often.

If you want to grow food with a smaller environmental footprint and fewer daily chores, no-till is a good way to go.

4 Things to Know Before You Start

Now for the nitty-gritties. Out of all the things I’ve learned from my experience with no-till, I think these four are the most important for beginners to be aware of.

No-Till Doesn’t Mean No Work

I’ve heard this saying tossed around in one form or another, sometimes in a way that’s a bit misleading.

It’s true that no-till systems require less “busy work” than traditional gardens. You’ll do considerably less watering and weeding, especially with deep mulch strategies, since the mulch keeps moisture in the soil and suppresses a lot of the weeds. But a no-till garden will still need some level of maintenance to produce the best possible harvests.

When starting or switching to a no-till system, the biggest workload you’ll have is at the beginning. And I won’t lie to y’all, this is a JOB.

Good no-till strategies involve bringing in lots of organic mulch to layer on your topsoil, such as compost, manure, fall leaves, woodchips, grass clippings, etc. You may need to gather and haul those materials yourself. If you’ve got whole leaves, you’ll need to shred them before spreading- intact leaves piled deeply may create an impenetrable layer that prevents water from reaching the soil underneath.

Once you get them on-site, spreading your amendments and mulch on the garden can easily turn into a multi-day project. And, if you’re starting a new garden on a lawn or ground that hasn’t been cultivated, you’ll definitely want to get some weed barrier in place before you start on that, like cardboard or newspaper.

When we first started our new garden at the homeplace, we worked on installing it a little at a time to avoid getting burned out. We’ve done the same thing with the several expansions we’ve made so far.

Once the garden is established, these are some of the maintenance tasks you’ll probably find necessary:

-Weeding! Though the deep mulching technique used in many no-till systems reduces the amount of weeding you’ll have to do, I’m convinced there’s no such thing as a weed free garden. Some weeds will laugh at mulch.

In my no-till beds, I regularly deal with invasive autumn olive shoots, poison ivy, honeysuckle, horse nettle, and some sort of clumping grass. Those guys all seem to have no trouble growing through my cardboard weed barrier plus six inches of compost, leaf litter, and pine straw.

Still, weeding a no-till garden is a lot less intensive than weeding a traditional one, since the weeds will grow and spread more slowly. It’s something you’ll only need to fool with every few weeks or so, depending on what type of weeds you’ve been blessed with.

Using recycled cardboard as weed barrier will further reduce the amount of weeding you’ll need to do. Try to find plain-ish cardboard with only small amounts of colors and ink.

If you can’t get ahold of enough cardboard to cover your entire garden space, focus on borders and edges. This is where weeds are most likely to get a foothold and become a problem.

Replenishing mulch. Mulch and compost breaks down and becomes part of the soil over time, so you’ll need to add new layers to your beds periodically. This should be done at least once a year, but I usually do it once in late fall and once in the spring.

-Watering in dry spells. Even with an efficient system, plants may need watering if you have more than two weeks without rain, especially if it’s hot out. Here, we usually have a dry spell in mid-summer (this year, it was a grueling six weeks).

Soaker hoses and drip systems aren’t hard to install, and they conserve more water and time than hand-watering. One of the drawbacks of our new garden spot at the homeplace is the fact there’s no well (yet). So, we currently have city water. I watered eight large beds with soaker hoses last season, and the biggest water bill increase we saw was $5.

For more sustainable watering, you could also look into ways of collecting and storing rainwater for the garden, such as rain barrels or earthworks like swales.

Fertilizing. It’s true nature is perfectly efficient, but keep in mind we’re asking our annual veggie plants to grow in a way that’s not natural for them, often in a climate they aren’t adapted to. Peppers, for instance, are perennial in their native tropical regions. We grow them as annuals in temperate climates, hoping for a harvest within months from a plant that normally has years to grow and fruit.

A lot of our favorite veggies have also been bred to do things plants wouldn’t do in the wild- like producing huge, juicy fruit heavy enough to snap stems if they aren’t supported. Realistically, crops like this need more nutrients than the soil biome can provide to produce a good yield before frost.

Though their fertilizer needs are considerably less in a no-till system, feeding your annuals with an appropriate organic fertilizer several times throughout the season will boost your harvests.

Starting and tending a compost pile. Compost plays an important part in building soil the no-till way, and buying bagged compost on the regular gets crazy expensive.

Keeping up a compost pile or bin requires some commitment, but it’s well worth the effort, and it’s a great way to cut down on food waste. Ever felt guilty for letting salad greens you bought rot in your produce drawer? Compost pile. No more guilt.

No-Till Takes Time

I see the claim pop up here and there that you can throw some compost down on your lawn and plant your garden in it the same day. And I guess you can. There’s no law against it! But unless you’re lucky enough to have loamy, humus-rich topsoil to begin with, you won’t get productive plants.

Chances are, your uncultivated lawn consists of sod on top of very compacted soil (compacted clay, for most of here in the Southeast). Once the roots hit that hard layer, they’ll struggle to penetrate, and the plants won’t grow well. You’ll do better to prepare your garden bed(s) in the fall and plant them the first time in the following spring. That way, everything has time to settle in.

Even if you plan ahead and prep in the fall, you can’t expect mind-blowing results with your first few plantings. The truth is, it takes a while (I mean a long time) for that microbiome to develop and change the structure of your soil.

Consider the fact that the topsoil of a forest floor or thriving meadow probably took decades or longer to reach such a level of fertility. Likewise, the organic materials you’ve added need time to break down and work their way into the ground. This happens gradually, via the work of worms, microbes, fungi, and rainfall.

How long are we talking about?

Depending on your no-till approach and what kind of soil you’re working with, it might take two or three years before you see noticeable changes in your soil’s structure and fertility. The best way to look at this is the same way you’d look at planting a fruit tree. Just because you don’t get loads of fruit the first few seasons doesn’t mean the tree is not working.

What to do in the meantime:

Just because the soil isn’t perfect yet doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bother planting in a no-till garden the first year. Growing in it, and then leaving your annual crops’ roots to decay in the ground, helps the process along. Just know that you may not see the full payoff of your efforts until after the first few seasons. But you can still get a decent yield during this time.

Note that you may need to feed your plants more often at the beginning, and that’s completely fine. I’ve found that plants are most likely to get hungry for nitrogen in a newer no-till bed. Liquid fish emulsion is an organic fertilizer that’s high in nitrogen and trace minerals. Since it’s water-soluble, the nutrients are immediately available to plants.

How to speed things along:

There are a few other things you can do to jump-start a new no-till bed and improve your results in the early stages. I had to re-locate my garden last year and start over from just a lawn on top of red clay, and, considering the state of that “soil,” I was able to grow some surprisingly productive crops by taking a few extra steps when I prepared the beds. Pests May Be a Bigger Problem in the Beginning

I’ll be honest, this one might be the reason a lot of people give up on a no-till system after the first year.

I first started doing no-till with a combination of the classic No-Dig compost layering and Back to Eden deep mulching (a strategy I still use). That first spring, my garden was overrun with slugs. They ate the leaves off my squash seedlings, ravaged the basil and marigolds, and topped the peppers for me (apparently, some people do that on purpose?).

Why the slugs? Because they LOVE mulch. Slugs like to hide anywhere that’s damp and dark during the day, such as underneath leaf litter. Even better if it’s rotting, and more bonus points if there’s a buffet of tender seedlings in the middle of it. This applies to other pest insects as well, such as thrips and flea beetles. The mulch gives them an ideal place to hide while they wait for the right time to feast.

When I saw how much damage the slugs were causing, I reached out to more experienced no-till gardeners to ask how they handled this problem. There are tricks you can use to deal with slugs (a ton of different methods). But the most interesting answer I got was, again: be patient.

Whenever you make a drastic change to a given ecosystem, such as your backyard lawn or a regularly tilled garden plot, it takes a little bit of time for things to balance out. Slugs and pest insects may enjoy a little population boom when they first congregate there. But eventually, their natural predators will move in and shut down the party.

I once again had a pretty big slug problem in my new no-till beds earlier this spring, and we resorted to going on nighttime slug hunts with a flashlight every time we had damp weather. Then, in early June, I saw two little snakes in the garden- a black racer and an eastern brown snake. Soon after, we were finding a lot fewer slugs.

If you end up facing similar problems when you first start with no-till, don’t give up on it. Reinforcements are coming.

Creating mini habitats for those reinforcements in the garden can invite them in more quickly. Garden snakes and toads appreciate rock or wood piles they can use as hideouts. They’re also attracted to water features like mini ponds (a project I would love to take on but haven’t found the time for yet).

It’s also essential to utilize companion planting in no-till gardening systems. That’s because crops planted in neat rows or beds all by themselves are sitting ducks. The more diverse you can make your garden beds, the better.

While not really effective against slugs, companion plants can help reduce damage from common pest insects. Some companion plants deter pests by scent (ex. onions, chives, marigolds) and others attract predatory insects (ex. dill, fennel).

Don’t be tempted to use broad spectrum insecticides (even organic ones) when dealing with pest problems, as doing so can set you back in the long run. Those products kill pests and beneficial species without discretion.    

Marigolds are one of my go-to companion plants for the pepper patch.

Certain pests that love to destroy our annual vegetables may continue to be a problem even with the above strategies in place, which brings me to the next point.  

Turning the Soil Isn’t Always the Wrong Choice

This one is a matter of opinion, but hear me out:

Even when we’re gardening the no-till way, we’re still going against nature by planting lots of non-native vegetables in the same plot. No matter how healthy our soil is, this practice invites pests to the garden, and the larvae of some unwanted bugs like borers and beetles overwinter in cocoons in the ground.

If you live somewhere under the reign of the infamous squash vine borer, you’ve probably seen that these monsters can wipe out your squash and pumpkin crops in a week flat. And sometimes, crop rotation isn’t enough. SVB moth females will fly up to a mile (at least) in search of a host plant to lay its eggs on, so moving your squash to the other side of the garden won’t do you much good.

If you’ve had a lot of damage from these little monsters, a light tilling (4-6 inches) can help control them. Turning the soil exposes the cocoons to predators, reducing their populations the following year. The same goes for the much-hated Colorado potato beetle. If possible, it’s best to do this job with a hand cultivator like a digging fork or garden claw instead of a rototiller, since that’s less disruptive to the soil life.

A one-time tilling can also speed up your attempts at improving the soil biome, if you’re starting a new garden in very compacted, very poor soil. With ground like this, you don’t really have anything to lose. That initial loosening will help your amendments “settle in” faster. Otherwise, it would take a very long time for that organic matter to find its way past the hard top layer.

Some no-till advocates are pretty rigid about following no-till practices. But to me, no-till is less about a rulebook to follow and more about how we understand and relate to the soil. This simply means understanding the soil biome and its importance to plant health and the ecosystem.

When gardening sustainably, you have to strike a balance, making decisions with soil life, beneficial animals and insects, and natural processes in mind. Sometimes, this means turning over the squash beds so the birds can find the borer cocoons.

No matter how you choose to do it, gardening will always involve adapting and overcoming.
