When to Transplant Spring Seedlings + Transplanting Tips to Help Them Thrive

A lot of staple spring and summer crops are best started from transplants, including things like tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, and broccoli. I also like to transplant many of my annual flowers instead of direct sowing them; that way, Iāll get earlier blooms, which help attract pollinators to the garden.
Moving baby plants from their safe little pots out into the garden is a big change that can really stress them out. To reduce transplant shock and get them off to a good start, itās essential to get a few of the details right when planting, such as timing, handling, and post-transplant TLC.

Hardening Off: The Most Essential Step for Successful Transplanting
Before you think about transplanting seedlings you raised indoors, the first step is to make sure theyāre fully hardened off. Hardening off is the process of gradually acclimating them to outdoor conditions before planting. If your seedlings arenāt properly hardened off first, no amount of transplanting care will prevent severe transplant shock and likely seedling losses.
To harden off seedlings, start by putting them outdoors in the shade for an hour or so. Each day, add a little more time and slowly introduce them to the sun, beginning with filtered sunlight. Eventually, youāll leave them out all day (and overnight, if you like) so they can experience natural temperature shifts while still in their pots. The whole process should be done over a week, at minimum (longer is often better).

If you’re starting with seedlings purchased from a nursery, a hardening off period isnāt strictly necessary. Greenhouse-raised seedlings aren’t nearly as tender. However, they can get a bit of sun scorch on the leaves if moved suddenly into direct sun, since theyāve had some UV protection from the greenhouse. To prevent this, you can take a little time to gradually acclimate them to full sun. Keep them in a shaded area for a couple days and put them out in the sun for a few hours in the mornings, when the light isnāt as intense.
Timing: When to Transplant Spring Seedlings
The right time to plant out depends on what youāre growing. Cool-season seedlings can handle some cold weather soon after transplanting, while it can severely shock heat-loving veggies like tomatoes and peppers. Here are some guidelines for each category:
Cold-Hardy Seedlings
These are crops that can tolerate frost and like to grow in cooler weather, like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Swiss chard, lettuce, and other hardy greens. As a general rule, most cool-season crops can be planted out two to four weeks before your average last frost date in the spring. Since every spring is different, though, it pays to check on the extended forecast and the soil temperature before transplanting.
For planting out cool-season seedlings, wait until:
-The soil temperature is at least 50 degrees when checked in the early morning. Some can handle soil temperatures in the 40s, but their growth will be painfully slow, leaving them more vulnerable to spring garden pests like slugs and cutworms.
-No low temperatures below 35 F are forecasted a week out from planting day. While many cool-season crops are hardy down to the low twenties and even teens at maturity, thatās not the case when theyāre young seedlings. Recently transplanted seedlings are even more likely to take cold damage.
-Daytime highs are consistently above 50 F. Multiple days in a row with cold nights and highs in the 40s can trigger bolting (premature flowering) in cool-season crops, especially brassicas. Crops like broccoli and cabbage are biennials. In their natural life cycle, theyāll produce leafy growth and a head one year, overwinter, and produce seeds in the spring. They can overreact to a prolonged spring cold snap, decide theyāve experienced winter, and go to flowering instead of forming a head.

Sometimes, timing your spring transplanting for cool-season crops requires a little bit of a gamble no matter what you do. While itās best to hold off when sub-freezing temperatures are still a possibility, you also donāt want to wait too late. These crops will struggle if it gets too hot out before theyāre close to maturity.
In our garden, my strategy is to have frost blankets ready to go in case we get a significant cold snap after I transplant cool-season seedlings. Frost blankets will do a good job protecting newly transplanted cold-hardy seedlings down to temps in the high 20s. If thereās a good possibility of temperatures a lot lower than that, Iād err on the side of caution and wait to plant out.

Warm-Season Seedlings
Summer crops like peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, and many of our favorite annual flowers canāt survive any amount of frost without serious damage. They donāt much care for chilly nights, either.
That average last frost date is just an average, and it usually wonāt be your target planting date for heat-loving crops. Itās best to go by soil temperature and the weather forecast instead. Many years, our warm-season crops donāt go out until a week or more past our average last frost date.
Donāt fall victim to āfoolās springā and get tempted to plant them out too early. Youāll get better growth and less transplant shock if you wait until warm weather is around to stay.
Before transplanting frost-sensitive crops, wait until:
-The soil temperature is at least 60 F. Thatās the bare minimum, if thereās a reason you canāt wait any longer to plant. Ideally, wait until that thermometer reads 65 or higher.
-Nighttime lows are averaging at 50 F or higher in the extended forecast. Even if you donāt get frost, a lot of back-to-back nights in the 40s will still result in stalled growth, nutrient deficiency, and even leaf damage in warm-season seedlings. That said, one or two nights below 50 wonāt be the end of the world (especially if you have seedlings that are outgrowing their pots).
-Wait until thereās no threat of frost on the table. Frost can happen at temperatures as high as 38 F. Donāt cut it close, since forecasts arenāt always accurate. Weāve noticed low temperatures often drop up to five degrees below what was forecasted in our garden, due to the fact weāre in a more mountainous area than the nearest weather station.

Ideal Transplanting Weather
Waiting for warm-enough nights is a must, but other weather factors can also stress out your new transplants. The perfect time to transplant is when youāre expecting a few days of warm, overcast, calm conditions. Bonus points if a gentle soaking rain is in the cards for the next day.
One thing youāll learn when you start gardening every year is that itās usually not possible to do everything at the āperfectā time. No need to worry, if the only time you have available to transplant is during a sunny stretch when that afternoon breeze is picking up a bit. Your seedlings may droop a little, but theyāll adjust.
However, there are a few weather situations youāll need to wait out to avoid serious shock or possible damage to your transplants. Hold off, if any of the following are on the way:
-Unseasonable heat waves. In spring 2026, weāve had record high temperatures for April in my area. Newly transplanted seedlings of any kind wonāt be too happy, if afternoon temps soar into the 90s right after they go in the ground. Ā
-High winds. Spring cold fronts can bring blustery conditions during planting season. New transplants may get wind burn on their leaves from too much wind, so itās best not to plant while winds are constantly gusting well over 15 mph (or expected to within the next several days). You might be fine to go ahead, if your garden is in a sheltered area with a good windbreak such as a hedge.
-Heavy rain. An average rainy spell wonāt be a problem, but you might want to delay planting if thereās the potential for severe thunderstorms or flooding rains.
What Time of Day Should You Transplant?
Planting out during or just before the afternoon heat may cause some pretty dramatic wilting in new transplants. It can happen even if itās not super hot outside, if the sun is out in full force.
Unless you have one of those nice overcast days to work with, itās safest to do your transplanting in the late afternoon or evening, when the sun isnāt too intense. That way, your seedlings get a little adjustment period before they have to deal with those midday UV rays.
Preparing the Transplanting Site
New transplants will fare best when put into loose, aerated soil; that way, they can spread their roots without too much effort. Dig each transplanting hole about twice the depth and width of your seedlingsā root balls so theyāll have plenty of loosened soil to work with when starting out. This isnāt as necessary, if youāre planting into soil thatās already really loose and fluffy, such as a newly-filled raised bed.
Sensitive transplants also need good drainage. You donāt want them sitting in a pond for hours, if you get a thunderstorm soon after planting. When planting in my in-ground garden beds, I like to plant seedlings on āhillsā to keep the root crowns elevated. This helps prevent soil-borne disease and waterlogging. Many gardeners who have traditional tilled plots plant seedlings on raised rows.

Should you add any amendments to the transplanting hole?
There are a ton of suggestions out there for magic bullets you can put in the transplant hole to make your seedlings explode with growth. Bone meal, aspirin, fish carcasses, banana peels, etc. etc. I have experimented with lots of those things, and Iāve never noticed a striking difference in growth in seedlings that got the special treatment.
Two things I do sometimes add to transplant holes are mycorrhizae and pure Epsom salt.
Mycorrhizae, which are beneficial fungi, help plantsā roots take in more nutrients. Iāll usually add a scoop of mycorrhizal inoculant to planting holes if Iām working in a new part of my no-till garden, where beneficial fungi havenāt had much time to establish naturally. While it won’t make or break your transplants’ success, it does help plants develop stronger, more resilient root systems.
The Epsom salt? I put a tablespoon in each planting hole for my tomato seedlings, mainly because itās tradition. All of the older gardeners in my family swore by it. They clearly knew how to grow tons of tomatoes, so I donāt question it. Ā

How Deep Should You Plant?
Some seedlings greatly benefit from deep planting, while others prefer to be planted with the stem base level with the soil. Itās important to know the difference, since those that donāt enjoy buried stems may develop rot if planted too deep.
Hereās a quick overview for some of the more common crops you may be transplanting:
Plant Deep
- Tomatoes
- Tomatillos
Both of these can grow adventitious roots along their stems. You can remove some lower leaves and bury up to two-thirds of the stem for a stronger, more vigorous root system.

Plant Up to the Cotyledons (First Seedling Leaves)
- Cabbage
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Eggplant
- Marigolds
- Cosmos
- Zinnias
- Basil
- Sage
- Thyme
These seedlings have tougher stems that tolerate burying. While they wonāt form adventitious roots as vigorously as tomatoes, planting them a bit deep can help stabilize the plants as they grow. Thatās especially helpful for plants that get top heavy, like cabbage.
Plant Level with the Soil
- Peppers
- Squash, cucumbers, and melons
- Plants that branch from the base (spinach, lettuce, greens)
- Most other herbs and annual flowers
The above plants are prone to getting stem rot if you plant them too deep. Pepper seedlings will sometimes develop some little root nubs along the lowest inch or so of the stem. If you see them, you can bury the stem just deep enough to cover the developing roots.
Watering New Transplants
Keeping transplants well-watered until the roots establish is the top priority to get them growing as soon as possible. Give them a drink every two or three days for the first week, unless youāre getting some rainfall. If you donāt use mulch in your garden (which I highly recommend) they may need water every day during dry weather.
When watering new transplants, the goal is to keep the soil consistently moist (but not muddy) to stimulate root growth and reduce stress. Once you notice your transplants pushing new growth, you can cut back on watering. Most established annual veggies need a deep watering around once per week, either from rainfall or irrigation.

Protecting New Transplants from Pests
Sometimes, new transplants act as a pest magnet because theyāre something new, theyāre nice and tender, and theyāre giving off stress signals as they adjust to the move. Some pests, like aphids, flea beetles, and thrips, are specifically attracted to stressed plants.
The three little pests mentioned above are mainly just a nuisance. They may cause some curling or stippling on leaves, but theyāll usually go away without much intervention once your plants get established.
Unfortunately, other pests like slugs, earwigs, and cutworms also love young transplants. These guys can make your seedlings disappear overnight, or you might come out to find them eaten down to the stalks.

Ragged holes, tattered leaves, and slime trails points towards slugs, while earwigs tend to damage the new growth. Cutworms, which are chubby brown or black caterpillars that hide beneath mulch or loose surface soil during the day, eat ācleanerā holes in the leaves. Theyāll also sever leaf stems and even main stems on smaller seedlings, leaving them cut off at the soil line.
If you see any damage like the above, get some defensive measures in place so these critters donāt pick off your seedlings one by one.
In our garden, slugs and cutworms cause the most trouble for spring seedlings, particularly our cabbage. Luckily, cutworms aren’t too smart. Iāve found that making seedling collars out of paper towel/tp rolls or the top of a plastic cup is about 90% effective at preventing cutworm losses. Just make sure the collar is pushed down into the soil a bit so they canāt go under.

There are a few ways of dealing with slugs, depending on how big of a slug problem you have. Hand-picking at night when they start to feed works, but youāll have to stay on top of it when youāve got small and vulnerable seedlings. You can also use beer traps, diatomaceous earth, or iron phosphate pellets such as Sluggo, an organic-approved slug bait.

Should You Fertilize After Transplanting?
Right after transplanting is a good time to side-dress seedlings with slow-release natural fertilizers, such as bone meal, kelp, etc. These will be available for the growing plants to use later on. Since I use a deep-mulch no-till system in my garden, putting down dry fertilizer when I transplant means I donāt have to move the mulch back twice.
For fast-acting liquid fertilizers, itās best to wait until your seedlings have had a week or so to get settled. Newly transplanted seedlings usually have a little pause in growth and nutrient uptake as they adapt to their new spot. That means liquid fertilizers wonāt do them a ton of good in the first few days.
New transplants are also more vulnerable to fertilizer burn. While using a gentle, natural fertilizer like fish emulsion immediately after transplanting wonāt do any harm, stronger conventional fertilizers that are high in nitrogen are likely to burn stressed seedlings.
What to Expect After Transplanting
Newer gardeners get worried when their newly transplanted seedlings start looking sad, but itās pretty normal for plants to be dramatic about a sudden change. You might see some drooping, in the first few days. Seedlings that were getting noticeably bigger each day in their pots will appear to stall out. This is just part of the adjustment process for new transplants.
If your seedlings droop, donāt douse them with extra water if the soil is already wet. Once they chill out and realize theyāve got a lot more space to work with, theyāll perk up and pick back up where they left off.

Seedlings usually take up to a week to recover from transplanting and start growing again. If they still look the same at this point, or if they start showing severe wilting, yellowing, or dropping leaves, theyāre likely dealing with a worse case of transplant shock.
